"Food & Table Manners Around the World"

Hello everyone!

We start the new year - even though we're en February by now - with a new topic for you to write about. Well, if you happen to be Chinese, you have just started the year 2011... Be as it may, here is the new activity for you. It deals with the topic of food around the world and also with the really useful topic of "table manners". After all, we don't want to offend our hosts in the future or to act inappropriately in a business meeting, right?

So for those of you who want to discover Table Manners Around the World... what about doing this nice Online Quiz? http://www.fekids.com/img/kln/flash/DontGrossOutTheWorld.swf

And now comes the WRITING TASK!

This month we are going to create a "Food and Drink Guide for Visitors". So what about choosing an interesting recipe to talk about and, apart from that, telling foreigners about some of your traditions? Read other students' comments before writing so that you do not describe the same recipe or explain the same traditions, ok? Obviously, the first person to write has more options than the last!!! ;)

For help, you can have a look at page 94, exercise 1 and 8. Both will be useful for this task. As always, if you have any problems do not hesitate to contact me, ok?

Good luck and enjoy your meal!

  1. The Spanish omelette is a typical Spanish meal and the most part of the visitor like this recipe. It's not bad for health because it don't apport any bad ingredient, so it's healthy for you. Also is a tradition see the ''Castellers'' and if you want you can participate in one of this!

  2. What you tell us sounds really interesting, Eugeni. Certainly, Spanish omelette is one of the most famous recipes and most visitors like it. I agree with you that its ingredients are quite healthy. As for the tradition you mention - "the Castellers" - it would be interesting if you explained a bit more about this tradition because otherwise visitors won't understand what they are supposed to see or do (in case they want to participate!).

  3. I'm going to explain the most popular recipe in my village that it's in Teruel.
The most famous meal are the crumbs and really that are the bests crumbs of Spain. You can eat it with a lot ogf ingredients: we can eat it with grapes, with sausages, with bacon or we can eat it alone. But they are very good anyway. When you want to do them, you can do them very easilly and that's a very cheaper meal and economic. Because you only need: a piece of bread depending of how many people, grapes, sausages, bacon, garlic and a little bit of oil.
I recomend that you eat them, preferably in Teruel.

  6. I'm going to write about creps, a very typical dessert that is from Belgium but we cook it too. You need some basic ingredients (milk, eggs, flour, sugar, a little of salt and a little of butter) You have to put all this ingredients in a bowl do a mix and when you see that there isn't lumps, you pour it in a pan and fry it. Then you turn it over and when you have a solid pastry you put it in a dish. Finally you decide what do you want to put (salty or sweet) and you can eat creps!

In Catalonia we have a lot of activities one is a popular dance that is called "ball de bastons"
The simbology is that there are something similar a two teams that fight doing some stranges movements.
They have to wear a typical dress: a strip, a shirt, a handkerchief and a trousers. The colour of the clothes depends of the place where the dancers are.
They dance with some typical catalan instruments like "gralla" or "sac de gemecs", they normally use popular melodies.

Really that recipe appeared in Andalucia, but it appeared in Teruel around 200 years ago and all started when an Andalusian man went to Teruel and he put a shop where he only sold crumbs and over time the crumbs where became the most popular meal from Teruel. And even Teruel put "The day of the Crumbs" where a lot of people of every village meet on one to eat them. And that's the tradition of the crumbs of Teruel.

  8. In Ourense, that it’s my village, the traditional dish is the octopus. You need some basic ingredients, like as octopus, some red hot ground paprika, thick sea salt extra virgin olive oil and water.
    1. First of all, defrost a previously frozen octopus in the fridge overnight.
    2. Then, fill a large stock pot with water about halfway and bring to a boil – don’t add anything like salt.
    3. When the water is boiling, get a good grip on the octopus and dip it into the boiling water, lift out immediately and when the water returns to a boil, dip it briefly again. Repeat this dipping 3 or 4 times until the tentacles have curled.
    4. After that, put the octopus in the water and let it boil over medium heat for one hour, approximately. Then, turn off the heat and leave the octopus in the water for 10 minutes.
    5. Finally, remove the octopus and drain it, cut it into small pieces with scissors, place it on a platter and sprinkle it with extra virgin olive oil, sea salt and hot paprika.

In Andalucia there are a lot of traditional things, like as the popular “sevillanas”. They’re a typical dance of Seville, that are danced in some fairs throughout the region of Andalusia. Typically, they are danced in pairs and they are accompanied by a Spanish guitar. And especially, the woman wears a dress with ruffles.

  9. Another famous recipe of Teruel is "torrijas", a slice of bread fried with milk and eggs and when it is toast you put honey on it, it's so delicious but be careful to eat a lot, it isn't very healthy.
Apart of the fantastics scrumbs and "torrijas" there are a the traditionals dances and songs "las jotas". They are espectaculars choreographys with dances, music and songs.
If you can ,go to Teruel and while you are tasting the scrumbs or the "torrijas" you can see and enjoy "las jotas".
